What are Fishing Gloves?
Fishing gloves are specially constructed hand coverings that are used by professional fishermen as well as many fishing enthusiasts. The gloves perform the same function as any pair of gloves, in that they help to keep the fingers and palms of the hands warm and comfortable. However, gloves designed for use during fishing expeditions also function in a couple of other important ways.
Many examples of the fishing glove are constructed with materials that help to enhance the ability to use the hands freely during casting and other actions. This is true in all types of fishing situations, including fly fishing and ice fishing. The gloves protect the hands from the wind and cold of any climate while not encumbering the movements of the fingers. In order to accomplish this, most types of fishing gloves use lightweight materials such as neoprene to ensure the hands stay warm while the ability to move easily is retained.
In the actual design of the fishing gloves, the fingers are often curved slightly. This aspect of the design also aids in the free range of movement of the fingers. In order to make sure water and cold do not permeate into the glove around the wrist, a simple hook and loop design creates a secure cuff around the wrist that can also be attached to the sleeve of other protective gear. Together, they create a barrier to the elements that is virtually windproof and waterproof.
Another aspect unique to fishing gloves is the construction of the palm area of the gloves. The palms as well as the inside areas of the fingers are treated to prevent slipping. This is especially important when attempting to grip a fish as it emerges from the water, or in order to hold on to equipment that is wet and somewhat slippery.
Purchasing fishing gloves is not a difficult task. Many sporting goods stores carry several brands of gloves. Basic designs are also often found in the sporting goods sections of discount retail stores. While the gloves can be somewhat expensive, a good quality pair will last for many seasons and more than pay for themselves in terms of dexterity and comfort.
You would think that all gloves used specifically for fishing would be waterproof, but this is not the case. When you buy gloves make sure they are waterproof fishing gloves. It is no fun trying to fish and handle your fishing equipment with soaked gloves.
In general, I don't like wearing gloves when I am working or fishing. The gloves take away from the feel. For me, successful fishing depends largely on your ability to feel what is going on with your fishing rod and reel and the line. I can sense the fish on my line better when my hands are not inside gloves.
However, I can see how the professional commercial fishermen would need gloves to protect their hands. The fishing they do is totally different from the type of fishing I do as a hobby.
Wearing some type of protective glove is a good idea when you are fishing. I went on a fishing trip with my father and a couple of his fishing buddies when I was in high school. I was not a fan of fishing, but I knew the daughters of the guys my father was fishing with and the daughters were going, so it was like a fathers and daughters fishing trip.
What I dreaded most about the trip was having to take the fish off the hook after I caught one. We were also using worms, so baiting the hook was no picnic either, but not as bad as removing a slippery flopping fish from a hook.
To make a long story short, I was not wearing gloves and the hook I was removing from my first fish's mouth ended up firmly lodged in my hand. I thought I was going to faint when I saw all of the blood and realized it didn't belong to the fish. I haven't fished since then, but if I did I would definitely wear fishing gloves.
